Teen weight loss or gain -concern parents

Weight RSS Feed

As parents, we all want what is best for our kids. We all understand that being overweight can be deadly and the longer someone is overweight the worse the damage can become. If you have a teen that is overweight than I'm sure you want to know more about Teen weight loss.

Even with teen weight loss it still boils down to two specific things: diet and exercise. If you really want to succeed you should focus on making small changes.

It's never easy to make huge changes, and your kid doesn't need to. First things first, you are the one who buys the groceries so don't buy a bunch of junk. Steer clear of the fast foods, chips and sweets.

But, don't expect your teen to go cold turkey. Instead limit the amount that they get. So instead of buying box after box of chips or snack cakes by one or two cake mixes and that will be all they get for the week.

Same goes for eating out, once a week at the most. You are the parent and I know it's not always easy since they can get food at a friends house, but try to limit what they get at home. Again, start small and don't nag. Just be matter of fact and let them know this is the way it will be.

More than likely they will fuss at first, probably a lot, but hold your ground. It's in their best interest. Start getting more fruit and fresh vegetables in the house.

Next up, exercise. Again, start small. If your kid is really out of shape working out will be hard for them. They also may be embarrassed to go to a gym so don't force that on them. Without letting them off the hook, try to cater to what makes them feel more comfortable.

Maybe they would like some sort of home workout equipment, or a fitness video that they can use at home. You may even suggest that you work out together (though since they are a teen that may not be such a popular idea).

Before you start a workout program you should take your kid to the doctor for a complete physical. This is really important if they've been out of shape and overweight for a while. Make sure everything is ok for them to do physical activity.

Also help their body out as much as possible. Make sure your teen has good quality shoes that provide adequate support. Even as a teen they may have some sore knees so get them a knee brace if needed. Do everything you can to keep them safe and make their workouts more effective.

The one thing you should never do is nag. That will only turn them off. Look your kid has mirrors, they know they are overweight and even if they say they don't care, they probably do. Just help guide them, lead by example. Get fit yourself, maybe the two of you can lose weight together.

Helping your kid lose weight and get in better shape is possible. Use these teen weight loss tips and just be patient. It's not easy for anyone to do, try to remember that.
