Democratizing the skies
Remember the 80's and 90's?
Back then traveling by air was a by far bigger deal than it is these days. The aviation market used to be in a greater degree the domain of classic, more or less renowned carriers and the globe was not yet covered with a network of routes served by as many low-cost carries as is the case today. The boom which happened in the
low cost airlines sector, has changed the aviation industry dramatically. It is a kind of feedback relationship – the growing supply brought about a greater demand which in its turn lead to an increase in supply and so forth. This finds expression in the huge number of web pages devoted to finding promotions and bargains. So for the average consumer it no longer a problem to get hold of an advantageous air fare promotion and set out on a trip he or she maybe would not have afforded before this boom started.
Luckily for consumers and travelers – although, as many claim, unluckily for the environment – nowadays flight offers may drop below the level of a train fare. With the
current flight offers being as numerous and diversified as they are, one can pretty much fly everywhere for a fraction of the prices that dominated the aviation services market, say 15 years ago. And the funny thing is that in spite of the heated environmental debate and for all the talk about the terror threat the sector is boosting ever more - current flight offers are growing in numbers. This growth has proven to be sustainable even in the face of the recent crisis brought about by both the volcanic eruption and the inability of the European institution to quickly evaluate the situation and to take measures designed to reduce the financial losses on the part of the carriers and the distress on the part of the travelers.
We can surely call this whole development as some sort of democratizing of the skies.
It remains to see whether or not boom will carry on or not. Judging by the steps of many carriers, such as the long-term purchase agreements and opening new services or on the basis of the strong financial results the development should not end abruptly. It would have to take a big time crisis or a natural disaster surpassing the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull.
On the other hand who would have predicted the coming crisis or the Icelandic volcanic eruption a couple of years ago? In case this prosperity period for low-budget travelers should cease any moment soon – let us poke about on the Internet and find a nice air fare promotion while it is not too late.
