Antique canoe - will catch you dreaming
Few things can elicit the wondrous charm of spending lazy days on your local waterway the way a wooden canoe can. While there are still many manufacturers who make wooden canoes, many people prefer the 'real' thing and would like to own their own antique canoe. There are many places where you can buy a refurbished canoe.
As with most things, if you don't know what you're doing you're likely to get ripped off. There are many people who will gladly lie to you and take your money. It takes time and knowledge (time to acquire that knowledge) to be able to identify if a canoe that is being sold as an antique truly is, and if it is, is it worth the amount of money that the seller is asking for it?
If you truly want to find a canoe, you should do research and try to find serial numbers from the original manufacturers than compare them to the canoe you are looking at. Although, in many cases, it will be impossible to find the serial number on the canoe. It may have simply been rubbed off over the years, or just difficult to see. Or, worse, the serial numbers may never have actually been carved into the canoe itself but rather just used on shipping invoices, etc.
If you're not really looking for a collectible but you just want an 'old fashioned' style boat for your own use, you have several more options, and they usually won't cost you as much or be as tricky of a deal when you do find one.
When looking for antique canoe that you can actually use there are a few ways you can go. You can get a boat with the idea of refurbishing it yourself. This is a great option if you love woodworking and have the time to devote to such a project. Imagine how great it will feel to be floating down the river in this beautiful wooden boat you've restored with your own two hands.
If you like the idea of a restored boat but simply don't have the time or skill to do it yourself, just hire someone to do the restoration for you. Just be careful that you get everything in writing before the project starts. Make sure that you include things like the time frame, the price and the materials that will be used. These are just a few of the things that are covered in your contract. Also check the references of the person you are considering for the job.
Last you could simply buy a boat that has already been refurbished. This is the quickest, and most expensive, way to go. But if you have more money than time, this might be a good option for you. You can still enjoy a tranquil ride on the river in your beautiful new boat, but you don't have to deal with months of restoration.
The traditional old wooden canoes truly can be works of art and it would be amazing to be the proud owner of one of these boats, especially if they actually are water worthy. Just make sure that in your quest to find a beautiful antique canoe you don't rush into something and overpay then regret it. Take your time and find out how to do it first.
