Body language - huge part of our daily lives
Did you know that without body language a large part of communication between human beings would not exist? Upwards of 50-65% as a matter of fact. Communication is not just speaking. It is in the gestures we make with our hands and facial expressions. Even the way you sit or stand can tell people a lot about you. Your gestures, stances, and facial expressions probably say more about you than anything that comes out of your mouth.
The definition of body language is, "a form of para-language in which non-verbal communication elements hold and convey meaning within a social interaction between two or more people."
It can be said that was the first language ever spoken even though nothing was spoken. In very early human existence the spoken word was difficult due to underdeveloped vocal cords. people within the tribe or camp learned to understand each other through hand signals and body positions.
For example if a stranger was to come into their midst and meant no harm to them, the stranger would extend his arms with palms of the hands facing upward showing the leader of the tribe or camp that no weapons were present. This custom may be the precursor to the handshake that people greet each other with in this day and age.
The meaning of shaking and nodding of the head is universal. Shaking your head means "no", and nodding your head means "yes". If you stand with legs apart, one foot slightly ahead of the other and your arms crossed, this signals to other that you are, at the least, unapproachable and should be left alone. On the contrary, if you are standing feet shoulder width apart, arms down at your sides or even extended with palms up then you are sending the signal that you are approachable and are even inviting contact.
Who's best at this type of communication? Well, there may be some debate on this but couples would probably be in the top five best readers and senders. Do you ever notice that some couples can finish each other's verbal sentences. Well, the same thing happens when they finish each other's non-verbal sentences. Couples who are really in tune with each other can communicate with out saying one single word, just a look or a touch can say a thousand things, or just one thing. The understanding is in the reading of the signal itself.
There are many people who are considered experts in the field of gestures and expressions. It can tell someone that you are lying or telling the truth. Professional business people actually hire experts to sit in on meetings then give a detailed report on their impression of the gestures and expression given off by the participants in the meeting.
Athletes can use the knowledge of body language to help outwit their opponents. By sending one signal silently and then doing something completely different the professional athlete can gain quite an edge during a competition.
