Large oriental rug - is it handmade and authentic

Home organization RSS Feed

Since a true oriental rug is hand made, the bigger the rug the more expensive it will be, so a large oriental rug can be very expensive. If the rug is considered antique, more than 50 years old, it will add even more to the price and quality of the rug.

The difference between a rug and a carpet is size, so depending on how large your large oriental rug is going to be, it may actually be considered a carpet.Anything over 35 sq. feet is considered to be a carpet rather than a rug. Under 35 sq. feet and you are still in the rug category.

Besides size and age, there are other factors that will determine how much you will pay for your rug. For one thing, there are many rugs being passed off as being authentic oriental rugs when they are not. An oriental rug is hand made with all the knots that make up the fibers of the rug being done by hand.

There are some telltale signs of a hand made rug that you can look for that will help you determine if the rug you want to buy is a genuine oriental rug. For one thing, if the pattern of the rug is clearly visible when you turn the rug over and look at the back it is not machine made. If you are looking at a machine made rug than you won't be able to see the pattern on the back of the rug. Look at the fringe on the rug, is it a continuation of the main part of the rug (it should be) or does it look like a strip with fringe on it has been sewn on to the rug? If so, it's a machine made rug.

How tightly woven are the knots, this will tell you not only whether or not the rug is handmade but also the quality if it was handmade. The tighter and denser the knots, the higher the quality. If the knots look too uniform it might have been machine made. There should be a little irregularity in the knots if it was really hand made.

Can the rug be folded up? A quality hand made rug will actually be able to be folded in half and then in quarters. This is because of the way the knotting is done. A machine made rug will only be able to be rolled up. Of course, even when the rug is folded, it will still be very heavy and hard to move.

To get an idea of how old the rug is, take a magnifying glass and look at the base of the knots. You should see that the color has faded consistently from the bottom of the knot to the top of the knot. If the color has faded in a way that there is no consistency, that is usually a sign that the color has been artificially faded to make the rug look older than it really is.

Keep these tips in mind when you go out shopping for your large oriental rug. Doing so will help you be sure that you are really getting an heirloom quality product and not being ripped off.
