Home security monitoring system tips
When it comes to the cost of a home security monitoring system a lot of people wonder if it's really worth it. I think it's a little like a seat belt, it only needs to be there one time to make it worthwhile. One medical emergency or one would be intruder is all it would take for me to consider the system has paid for itself. Of course, there are pros and cons to anything and having a security system that is monitored is one of those things.
The downside of a monitored system is that it does cost money, usually monthly. The fees are generally pretty low, but it's still an expense. Another issue with having a system monitored, which can be good or bad depending on the situation, is that many monitoring companies will immediately call for help. This is great if there is a real emergency, not so great if it was a false alarm.
Due to increases in the number of false alarms many towns have implemented a fine system. It varies greatly from one community to the next, but often you will be charged if you have more than one false alarm in a certain period of time. That can become a hassle.
All that aside, I still think having a system that is monitored round the clock is the best way to go if you can afford it. I've had a system for years and never had one false alarm. Come on, it's really not that hard to turn the system off when you come in the door... it beeps at you.
The way these systems work is like this: you will install cameras and door sensors around your house (there are many other components you can add like glass break sensors, smoke detectors, etc). When the alarm is on the circuit will be complete. If a door on the alarm is opened it will break the circuit and the siren will sound, and the monitoring company will be notified.
You will have at least one door that is timed. That means that if you're just coming home from work and your security system is on, you'll have one door, say the door from the garage, that won't trigger the alarm if it's opened as long as you turn off the alarm within a set amount of time, usually around 30 seconds.
So if I'm returning home and my system has been on all day long I know that I can only come in through the one door that is on a delay. I'll hear the beeping of the system that will remind me that I have to turn it off. I'll go turn it off and no alarm will sound.
If I come in through another door, one that isn't on a delay, or forget to turn the system off within the allotted time the alarm will sound and the company will be contacted. At that point the company will call me (this procedure can change from one company to another, check the exact policies of the company you are going with). I will have already set up a pre-arranged code phrase that the company will ask for when they call. If I don't answer, or I don't give them the right code phrase they will call for help immediately.
This is done for your protection. You have a specific phrase instead of just saying 'I'm ok' because if someone is there with you they may be forcing you to say you are ok, instead you can give the wrong code phrase and the company won't react but they will call for help. The intruder won't know that you've basically just signaled a silent alarm with the security company. That is the basic overview of home security monitoring system.
With the right home security system, figuring out how to
keep a house secure inside and out becomes a whole lot easier. Remember that a new home security system does more than just keep criminals out:
