Safety and efficiency in elevator technology
Safety and efficiency in elevator technology
The number of
high rise buildings is on the increase. So also is the demand for elevators. This has translated into intensified deployment of state-of-art technology. The equipment have become more compact year after year with increased efficiency and safety. Owners of tall buildings and large facilities using lifts for human and material movement are seeking to deploy energy efficient technology too.
Let us examine each elevator sub-system for its technology content, safety and efficiency:
Car (cage) and its transport mechanism: This consists following systems -
Door control: Manual door with a switch is the simplest and most reliable when it comes to safety. Drive is cut-off, the moment the door is open or not closed properly. Infrared sensor can err as it picks-up the infrared emitted by humans. When the car is stationary, the door opens when the sensor detects someone moving very close to the door.
Steel rope. Counterweight, car guide rails to prevent lateral movements and oscillations.
Operator panel: witches for selecting the destination, door open, door close, emergency stop, fan control, hooter (alarm), and emergency telephone.
Technology changes have replaced relay based control system to Microcontroller based system. Early designs had very limited diagnostic feature. Periodic inspection, greasing the guides and ropes are necessary for the smooth functioning as well as safety. By
properly positioning the sensor(s) accidents arising out of door closure while some is entering or leaving the car, can be prevented . The designers do not entirely trust control with electronics alone. Additional (electrical) switches are used to sense the presence of persons on the doorway.
Drive (Motor): The design of high-speed and super high-speed elevators, used in high rise buildings do not employ induction motors. They are replaced by highly efficient permanent magnet motors.
Control system
The relay based control system needs frequent visual inspection by the maintenance technician. The contacts corrode over time developing a high-resistance contact. In relay based elevator control switches directly drives the relays. This leads the contacts in the push switches (used in control panel) to corrode fast.
Microprocessor control systems for elevators became the standard for elevators designed some twenty years ago. Should the elevator use relay-based controls, it is prudent to replace it with Microcontroller based solution. It could be expensive. Sometime soon it will become a necessity. Membrane keypads are less susceptible to cor rosion since they feature waterproof, dustproof, anti-corrosion. They are preferred by designers for their reliability, light weight, long life and colorful styles
Braking system: The braking system in elevators without speed control needs frequent checkup. The electronic speed control of drive motor gives more life to the braking subsystem.
Microcontroller based control system lends itself to diagnostics and performance monitoring. With usage, deviation of these parameters from the vendor's catalog can be noticed. Fine tuning the subsystems and replacements wherever necessary should be undertaken when there is significant deviation.
