Types of water fountains

Home improvement RSS Feed

Everybody seems to love water fountains, and with good reason. They are pleasing to look at, and the sound they make is relaxing and soothing. They come in all shapes and sizes, so there is sure to be one for every taste. Let's take a look at some of the more popular options.

First of all, water fountains that are meant to be enjoyed indoors are obviously designed smaller than their outdoor cousins. These are often not much more than a container with a hidden pump and hose covered with rocks, shells, or some other solid material that can't be harmed by water. These sit on a table or on a side stand and just do their thing. They are simple to maintain. Just keep the water topped off if too much evaporates out of the container. I once took a ceramic chip and dip bowl and made a fountain that was absolutely beautiful. I planted a small house plant in the dip section of the bowl. This kept the dirt separate from the water.

Water fountains that are more dramatic are those that have larger pumps. These move much more water, and the resulting sound is really something. I could not believe how much I enjoyed listening to the sound of the water flowing down the fountain I built in my yard years ago. I especially liked listening to it out my window at night during the summer. Hearing that trickle and bubbling sound just brought a smile to my face.

Other water fountains that many people like are small bubblers, or larger pondless waterfall type fountains. These are basically the same, just different sizes. The pump is hidden in a container under the rocks. The tube is run from the pump to the top of the fountain or waterfall. Once things are covered up and plugged in the water starts to flow. Your imagination is the only limit on these types of fountains. There is no standing water to worry about so you don't have to be concerned about children or animals falling into water and having troubles. The water seemingly disappears into the ground, where it is then recirculated to start the cycle all over again.

Finally, water fountains that are designed to appear as if they are coming right out of a wall, or other solid surface, are both functional and fun. These can be set up either indoors or outside. I have seen these in offices and other commercial settings. They make a stunning feature in any waiting area or lobby. They use the same principles of other fountains, but are made dramatic in appearance by running the water down copper, or over rocks. The fun comes from the illusion that water is pouring right out of a wall.

Water fountains of all sorts have a place in our lives. Whether large or small, indoors or out, fancy or simple, they add pleasure and whimsy to our daily routines. Something we can all use more of.
