Healthy eating plan-conflicting information makes it hard

Health RSS Feed

If you have spent any amount of time looking into what foods are good for you, and which ones aren't, then you are sure to have come across a lot of conflicting information. One week this food is bad for you, and the next it's the best thing ever...only to have it back to being bad a week later; it's enough to confuse anybody. It may be a minor annoyance most of the time, but if you are looking for a healthy eating plan, then it's important to know what's good for you and what isn't.

Now, as much as I would like to give you a full list of good and bad foods, that just isn't practical. Now just because new research is coming to light all of the time, but also because everybody is different. What's good for somebody else may not be good for you. For example, skim milk is a better choice than whole milk, but if you are lactose intolerant, then neither is a good choice for you. Instead of listing foods, I will offer some tips that apply to almost everybody in almost every situation.

You should always check with your personal doctor before you start a new healthy eating plan. The reason is that your doctor will know of any underlying health problems, and whether or not the plan you want to go on is a good one for you. Furthermore, they can give you advice tailored specifically for you.

Moderation is the key to any good diet. Some eating programs suggest that you eat as few carbohydrates as possible (the Atkins Diet is one example), while others tell you to eat as much of a single food as possible (like the Cabbage Soup Diet). You may be able to lose weight, or think you're eating healthy, but that's mostly an illusion.

Your body needs a wide range of nutrients to function at its best. Taking a supplement as a means of nutritional insurance isn't a bad idea, but it should never be done as way to make up for a consistently lacking diet. Besides, there are many compounds and phyto-nutrients in food that can't be duplicated in a pill. The best way to get your full range of vitamins and minerals is by eating them--and that's the true mark of a healthy eating plan.

The type of food you eat does matter, though. You can't just shovel your face full of double cheeseburgers and think you're eating well. Typically speaking, your diet should be loaded with fresh fruits and vegetables, lean sources of dairy and protein, fish, whole grains and healthy fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated). Again, remember to maintain a good balance, and don't try to have too much of any one type of food.

Doing these things, no matter which program you choose to follow, will ensure that you are sticking to a healthy eating plan. Sure, you can still listen to the latest nutrition news, but now you have a plan that you can actually stick to.
