Exercise to improve memory

Health RSS Feed

For years we have had scientific information on how beneficial exercise is for our health. It has also been documented the benefits it produces, not only to the heart and many other organs and body functions, but specifically to the brain. But even with these well documented neuro-enhancing attributes, scientists have not really been able to clearly decipher how the brain produces this benefit, as well as the improvement in the overall mental health.

The latest news from Cambridge University and the American Scientific Institute suggests a possible answer to this question. Their theory proposes the possibility that the brain generates a response that prompt the production of new "gray matter" from a special signal produced by exercise. Recently we heard of cases where the brain was able to regenerate damaged cells and bring them to life even in cases of brain damage disable people. So this theory makes sense, because now it is about bodies in motion, with an above normal level of activity.

Objectives investigated
The research was based on results from experiments with rodents. We know we have always used large and small rodents and other animals, in all kinds of experimentation. But in this case were mice which served the purpose, because they are given to higher pace movement and are easy to stimulate. Mice stimulated to constant exercise were used in the first group, vs. mice with fewer stimuli and less exercise in the second group. Mice that were in constant motion, say in an exercise wheel, produced greater amount of gray matter in their brains, than mice in the second group with lower levels of movement.

Research Results
According to the research team; exercise produces a phenomenal proliferation of neurons, producing millions of them in a few days. In the process of aging, the increase of new neurons could be responsible for a decrease in the normal process of deterioration of brain cells due to aging process. This increase in new neurons could also be responsible for the regeneration of functional active memory and past events memory.

Conclusions:
Although in the past, researchers had concluded that the increase in blood flow was the reason for the increase in the production of neurons that make up the gray matter, it is not necessarily the case in this investigation. The increase in blood flow by exercise is definitely a factor, but there is also a possibility that is due to increased hormone levels. So, although the exact component of regeneration and reproduction of new neurons continues even still unknown, it has been shown that exercise, besides been beneficial to the overall health; muscles, bones, heart, etc., it also enhances brain functions, improve memory and your overall mental health.
