Skin tests-do we need it

Health insurance RSS Feed

Skin allergies, fungal infections, bacterial infections and diseases like cancer can be detected through special skin tests. In case of cancer, the skin tests can distinguish between cancerous and noncancerous cells.
The skin tests which we nearly all of us know about are patch testing, skin biopsy and culturing. The purpose of patch testing is to diagnose any skin allergies. The professionals of skin testing apply identified allergens to the skin which is then supervised to observe reaction occurrence. It is often advised to keep the skin patch away from the reach of sunlight and the patient should also try not to remove the patch before at least 24 hours.
Coming over to skin biopsy, it is basically used for detection or ruling out of cancerous cells or noncancerous skin disorders, chronic bacterial infections or fungal skin. In this test, a small patch of the skin is removed and taken as a sample. This removal takes place after giving local anesthesia and the pathologist usually uses a scalpel or cylindrical punch. There are three major types of skin biopsy. Shave biopsy is perhaps the easiest one as the doctor would only shave off the top most layer of your skin and you would not even require any stitches.
On the other hand, the excision biopsy is one used for very deep wounds. Anesthesia is injected in the wound area as it would not be a very pleasant experience to have your entire sore dug out and then your skin being stitched. Sometimes, bleeding doesn’t stop and pressure needs to be applies to the biopsied area. In case a large lesion is to be removed, then a flap of normal skin is stitched to the area so as to replace the removed skin. The punch biopsies are also used for deep wounds but not as deep as excision biopsy ones. In this type of biopsy, the professional uses a cylindrical punch and removes a round piece of skin. In this case also if large sample is taken stitches would be required. It is a rapid and convenient procedure.
In culture test skin is cultured so that bacteria, fungi or viruses can be diagnosed. In this type of testing, the doctor uses a swab to scrape the area of the skin that has to be tested. Then the swabbed skin is put on the culture. Next, nutrients are added to the culture so that the bacteria can nourish. If growth of bacteria is seen, it means bacteria are present in the skin area. Now comes the time to study the bacteria and observe it. A microscope is usually used for this purpose so that kind of bacteria can be identified.
Be sure that the test you opt for is the one you require. It is always preferred to obtain a second opinion in these important matters. After one or more tests have been carried out on your skin, follow doctor’s instructions for its post-test care and do not show negligence.
