Pest control methods
Pests are a very common problem in today’s world affecting almost everyone. It is a common idea that the term ‘pests’ is used to refer to insects that destroy crops and other vegetation or plantation types. However, pests can be animals too that destroy or disrupt human health and ecosystem like mice, lice, mosquitoes etc. Due to advancement in technology and science, experts have found out various methods to get rid of this menace.
It is common sense to eradicate the places where pests reside and breed. Mosquitoes for example live and reproduce in areas where there is dirty, stagnant water present. If it is made sure that no such water is present near human habitat then there will be no mosquitoes either.
A very popular and old method is to hunt down the possible pest. This is done in cases where the pest is usually a big enough animal like a fox, raccoon or a stray dog that has been pestering time and again. Once hunted down, the animal can either be shot down or handed down to the local authority.
Some people try poisoning pests. This is not really the best option as usually food is poisoned to kill the animal but, it is not always a guarantee that it will immediately fall at the bait and die especially when it has more than one option where it can find food.
Another common method is to trap the pest. Most of us have practiced it in our homes when trying to catch any mice using mice traps. Such traps are easily available at shops everywhere now days.
Moving towards the field and plant pests, the most widely used pest control method is to poison spray the affected are or the area which is likely to be attacked. Special chemical compounds are used to spray over areas and left like that for a few hours to kill the insects. The compound components may vary to target specific pests. The fumes may also be harmful to humans so it is advisable to cover up and eating or drinking items and wear masks while spraying. Space Fumigation is the process in which land is sealed shut tightly by a plastic sheet with a toxic gas beneath the air tight setting for several days. This method is expensive and takes time to show results but the outcome is 100% and kills eggs as well as fully grown pests.
Farmers sometimes burn out fields once the harvest process has been completed. This is usually done to the sugarcane field to kill any remaining pests or eggs that maybe present. Crop rotation may also be done. In this, the farmers use the land to plant a totally different crop that is targeted by a separate pest. This starves the already present pests and kills them.
Lastly, if some plant is almost eaten away by pests and is well on its way to rotting and dying out, it is destroyed and removed off completely before it starts affecting other nearby plants.
