Gardening RSS Feed

When you plan to metamorphose your garden, one of the first choices you need to make is which tiles to use. Several types of stone emerge. You can go for concrete blocks, sandstones, bricks or natural stone. This article devotes attention to the latter. Even in this kind of stone, there is a great variety to choose from. Some characteristics of several of these are exposed below.

Freestone. Freestone is found in several countries, among which China , Vietnam and India. Depending on the finishing, scratches may appear on the stone. When directly exposed to the sun, due to UV radiation, the colour might change over time, it will be lighter. Especially freestone from India suffer from this, as it contains more lime than the other freestones. This could be considered an advantage, as your garden will have a vivid look, and evolves all the time.

Marble. Marble is widely seen as a luxury stone. However, it is more affordable than many think. It comes in the colours blue and black. Even though the quality is high, the stone could be vulnerable. It needs to be laid with extreme care. If you succeed in doing so, your garden will be of unsurpassed beauty. It will hardly scratch and colours are consistent.

Slate. Slate stone consists of several layers. This might result in differences in thickness among tiles. Among the tiles, colours might differ. Using the wrong type of cement may adapt the shape of t he tile. However, it is a very pretty stone, colour-consistent, and there is an ample offer of various types of slate.

Granite. Granite is a very heavy stone. This makes scratches hardly appear. Furthermore, the colour will not change over time. Certain types of granite however, usually the cheapest ones, can suck up water. This might give yellow spots on the tiles.

Basalt. Basalt is the absolute top-end of the natural stones. The only potential downside is that it may contain a certain vein. On the other hand, you do pay for this quality. It might be upto twice as expensive as freestone, for example.

I hope this article has contributed to your understanding of the various kinds of natural stones, and facilitated your choice of which garden tiles to choose.
