Grandfather wall clock - space saver - but beautiful
There are many people who just love the appearance of a grandfather clock, they have a stately majestic look about them that has been popular for centuries. Unfortunately, some people simply don't have enough room for one in their home. If that describes you, don't worry, you can still enjoy the beautiful styling of a grandfather clock, even in limited spaces, by getting a grandfather wall clock.
These smaller, and lighter, versions of their big brothers can still pack a big style punch but in much smaller spaces. Some of the common features of a grandfather wall clock are:
1. The 'long case' styling. It looks just like it's full sized counterpart, but is scaled down a bit. The wall clock will still have the pendulum, again, just in much smaller proportions.
2. These clocks are still quite heavy so you will need to mount them with care. Ask your local dealer or ask at your local hardware store to find the right mounting techniques for such a heavy piece. The last thing you want is for your clock to come crashing down in the middle of the night!
3. A grandfather style clock will still have a case that is located directly underneath the clock face. This case will hold the pendulum and weights. There will be an access door so you can adjust the pendulum and weights to keep the clock operating perfectly.
4. Most clocks will need to be wound on a weekly basis. Make sure you don't over wind your clock (it's not as hard to do as you may think). The springs are heavy so wind it very slowly.
5. These wall clocks can be made from several species of wood such as: oak, pine, maple, mahogany, beech and cherry. Each type of wood will have it's own unique characteristics. If you prefer a wood that is a finer grain you'll probably want to stick with cherry. If you like the big, bold wood grain look you'll want oak.
6 As you might imagine, the overall styling of the wall clock version of a grandfather clock is the same as a 'regular' grandfather clock. Wall clocks can have many additional decorative features such as marble, brass, stone, porcelain and glass.
They can also have a wide variety of carving details and cabinet styles. Some will have the split pediment top, others will be flat topped and still others will have a bonnet style top.
7. Many of the worlds finest grandfather clock makers also offer these smaller wall mounted styles. Companies such as
Howard Miller, Seth Thomas, Ridgeway, Bulova and Kleninger are some of the most well known.
Even if you live in a small space, don't think that you have to forego the elegance and beauty of a grandfather clock. You can get a grandfather wall clock and with so many choices of wood types and styling features, you'll be sure to find just the exact one that reflects your taste and personal style.
