5 tips for reducing your utility expenses
Oil, natural gas, and coal all seem to be depleting and/or polluting at an alarming rate. Until alternative energy takes over the grid you will be forced to comply with the high cost attached to these fossil fuels you rely on. This is why it is more important to adhere to some simple tips for reducing your utility expenses.
Heating and Air-Conditioning
During colder months turn down your heat five or more degrees while you sleep. An extra blanket, sleeping clothes or a partner will easily keep you warm and at the same time you will save money. During the day, if no one is home, do the same. When using an air-conditioner keep doors to unused rooms closed. This way unnecessary space will not be cooled therefore saving energy. If you do not have air-conditioning, purchase a fan and install it backwards in your window. This will draw out the hot air rather than blow it on you. If you have an attic fan, this too will do the same.
Water
Believe it or not, this important resource may soon be as valuable as oil. Therefore, take note of any wasteful habits that you may be able to curb.
- Brushing your teeth - Do not let the water run while scrubbing your pearly whites.
- Cooking – If you use boiled water, save it and water your plants with it once it cools off.
- Showering – Install water-saving shower heads and shower with a friend.
- Toilet – Switch to ‘low-flush’ toilets or place a few plastic bottles filled with used water to take up room in your tank and use less water per flush. Note: Three gallons must remain in the tank for proper flushing.
- Lawn – Water your lawn in the morning when full absorption can be attained.
Electric
Unplug appliances when not in use. Even though they may be turned off there is still a small electrical charge that over time can maintain an unnecessary, hidden drain on your bill. Look for EnergyStar appliances which are certified to save electricity. Obviously, turn off lights when not in use and be sure to empty the dryer lint filter after every cycle.
Insulation
- Wrap your water heater in an insulated blanket and save up to forty-dollars per year.
- Cover windows in cold months with plastic insulation and/or insulated curtains.
- Save up and replace single pane windows with double pane insulated glass.
- Find drafts and seal, caulk and weather strip.
- Wrap pipes in fitted insulation and also attic floors.
Light Bulbs
Change halogen bulbs and/or fixtures. Halogen bulbs are often described as using less energy however the transformers that are used to light the bulbs draw a lot more energy than a standard bulb. Use CFL bulbs. Initially the cost is more but in the long run one bulb can save you forty dollars over its lifetime.
