Nonverbal communication proxemics - another word for personal space

Ezine RSS Feed

Nonverbal communication proxemics is defined as, "the study of man's transactions as he perceives and uses intimate, personal, social, and public space in various settings". We all get agitated and even can feel violated when someone we don't know enters our personal space.

E.T. Hall has studied interpersonal relationships and interactions associated with those relationships. During his studies he coined the term "proxemics".

There are many things that affect nonverbal communication proxemics like the fact that people who are attracted to each other may stand or be closer to the other than people who are not attracted to each other. This is due to the perceived possible relationship that may be forming.

The first of the four listed distances people subconsciously adhere to when dealing with others begins with the intimate distance. Average intimate distance is between 0 - 18 inches. Two people in love have no problem with this distance because there is a certain level of trust and love in the relationship.

Strangers, on the other hand, will experience a certain level of discomfort, agitation, or anxiety if forced to be this close to another stranger like on a bus or on the subway. sights, sounds, and smells can become overwhelming at this distance and may make you want to back away even further.

I am sure you have heard someone talking about how someone else invaded their personal space or personal bubble. What does that mean? Well, your personal space is anywhere from 18 inches to four feet. Depending on the social situation, the comfort zone may be more or less but usually falls within the 18 inches to four feet. You will probably only feel some discomfort if someone tries to touch you within this space.

Social distance extends from 4 to 12 feet. Popular in business and formal situations, communication gets slightly more difficult. Unlike intimate distance or personal distance visual details and smells are still noticeable but they do not overpower you. Feelings of discomfort, agitation, or anxiety get less and less as the distances get further away.

Last but not least is the public distance which starts at 12 feet and extends outward from there. At this distance you have enough space to adequately form a perimeter of defense if need be. To communicate effectively from this distance, voices will need to be amplified or at least spoken very loudly to be heard. This is the type of communication you would find at a political speech or something of that sort.

Nonverbal communication proxemics is all about people maintaining adequate space in all of these forms of interpersonal relationships. This is a pretty simple concept and if you have ever wondered why you get upset when someone gets too close then the study completed by E. T. Hall will give you the information you need to understand intimate space, personal space, social distance and public distance and the differences between them. Do your own study if you are interested in finding out what distances are good for you and how close you can get before feeling discomfort.
