History of body language - actions speak louder than words

Ezine RSS Feed

The history of body language goes all the way back to when humans first inhabited planet earth. Anthropologists tell us that the first humans had underdeveloped vocal cords and could only make gutteral sounds at best. If this is true then how did they communicate effectively?

Through body language, that's how. Some hand signals were probably used, as well. Body language can tell the people around you many things. It can tell how you are feeling and if you are lying or not. Body language doesn't lie and it can give clues as to your true feelings, even though you may be saying something completely different.

Have you ever heard the expression, "actions speak louder than words"? Well, they really do. How you position yourself, gestures, and facial expressions can all communicate your feelings. You can train yourself to communicate effectively with others by getting your words and body language in sync with each other. Imagine the possibilities if you could learn to do this.

If you project confidence, people will have more confidence in you. You can do this by standing straight, looking people in the eye, and not stammering when you speak. If you project uncertainty, the same will follow. This happens when you slump your shoulders and seem confused about what it is you are talking about. Looking down and stumbling over your words will make people think you are unsure of yourself. If you are unsure of yourself, how can you expect anyone else to feel good about you.

Do not send mixed messages. If you sound like you know what you are talking about but your body language says you really don't then you will not instill confidence in your audience either.

Ever wonder about how some of the things we do actually came to be? Take the hand shake for example. Experts say that the hand shake originated as a gesture of friendship in far earlier times when visitors to a camp extended their arms and hands with palms facing up to show that no harm was intended to the people of the camp.

Every position you assume during your day reveals volumes about how you are feeling and it is fairly easy to figure things out based on your movements and gestures also. Look around when you are at work at others interacting and see if you can figure out how each participant is feeling through body language only.

For instance, you see two people come together in conversation and one crosses her arms, turns slightly away, and refuses to make eye contact. what does this body language say? What message is she conveying? She is conveying that she is bored and does not want to be having this conversation with the person she is having it with.

Conversely, if she is smiling and leaning toward the person she is talking to then you can be sure that her history of body language is saying that she wants to be right where she is.
