How to be the top dog-understand how dogs think

Education RSS Feed

Understanding how dogs think is one of the most important keys to training them effectively. When you know what makes them tick you can use that to train them faster, and that's good for both you and your dog. The most important principle to remember is that dogs are pack animals, and that means they not only thrive in the right social setting, but that the social setting can be used to train them.

Dogs make such good companions for people because they are pack animals. In effect, the people around them become their pack, and problems start to arise when this social structure isn't present or has otherwise broken down. Dogs will always find their place in any given pack, in this case it's your family. You may love your pet, but you can't let it be the top dog in your pack. If you do, then the dog will do whatever it wants, and that can actually be dangerous for the dog. Therefore, the caring thing to do is to have the human members of your family be the "top dogs" as far as your pet is concerned.

There is a clear cut hierarchy in the wild, but it's not always so easy for people to figure out. But, again, it is absolutely vital to understand this if you want to have a well-behaved pet. The other thing is that your pet will feel better once it knows its place because they need a social structure.

What it all comes down to is acting like a person, but also as the top dog in a pack at the same time. That means there will be times that you have to use corrective techniques that may not seem natural to you. Think about how dogs correct each other in the wild, and then translate those methods into human terms. For example, dogs may bite one another, but you should never bite your dog. However, you can use your fingertips to apply a fast and firm touch when your dog is doing something wrong. You're not trying to hurt your dog, so don't do it too hard. Instead, think of it as getting your dog's attention and to let them know you disapprove of their behavior.

Dogs are very good at detecting stress and will respond negatively when they feel it. Not having enough exercise or an improper diet are some of the things that cause dogs to be stressed. But the amazing thing is how well they can detect stress in people. If you're stressed out when trying to train your dog, then it will sense it, and not do what you want it to do. Therefore, you need to do your best to stay calm when dealing with your dog--remember, you are the one in control.

The pack mentality is ingrained into all dogs, and you are a member of the pack in their eyes. If you take the time to do it right, then it will be a happy pack.
