Safety razor vs straight razor
The differences between a safety razor vs straight razor may seem obvious but let's take a good look to find out for sure. Since they are two different kinds of razors this comparison may seem a little more like apples to oranges rather than apples to apples but I will do my best.
I think that a straight razor may actually have a more durable blade. Though it may need to be sharpened more frequently, like each time before it is used. The best way to sharpen a straight razor is to strop it before every shave.
Old style double edge razors have two separate edges and you could use one edge per shave if your beard is not too long. The blade does not need to be sharpened and if it disposable then all you have to do is change it.
Durability of the safety razor vs straight razor, the straight razor should have a small lead here. If it is taken care of it should absolutely last a lifetime or more. The blade is thick with a fine edge after sharpening and if it is made of stainless steel then it is a very durable product.
The safety razor can be just as durable but it may have some moving parts and if something is used repetitively and has moving parts, the parts can wear down and eventually break. Maybe the old school safety razors would be more durable. Depends on how well made it is.
Ease of use goes to the safety razor. If you are not used to using either type of razor, some practice may be necessary to perfect your technique. It should not take as long to perfect the safety razor technique as it will the straight razor technique. Angles and short strokes will do the job for both types but the handle on the safety razor will give your more control than trying to hold on to the straight razor.
Price points vary with both razors depending on the quality of each razor and the brand name of whomever made it. Of course, you will not need to buy extra blades for the straight razor so you may take that aspect into consideration if you must. Blade replacement can add up, I suppose.
Now down to the nitty gritty. What kind of shave can you get from either razor. Closeness and smoothness of your shave not only depends on the razor you are using it depends on how well you use the razor, or basically, your technique. If you use the right pressure and the right angles and the right strokes you can get a great shave from any razor you use.
With no moving or removable parts the straight razor could be considered more environmentally friendly. Disposal of the blades and blade cartridges for the safety razor means more trash for the landfills.
Straight razors are a lot more scary to use than a safety razor, though. You will want to make sure you are completely alone when you shave so no one can come up behind you and bump you. That could really get messy in a hurry. Safety razors are a much better option. I truly believe you need as much skill, dexterity, and most of all patience when using either type of razor.
So, what is the verdict on safety razor vs straight razor? I give them and equal thumbs up.
