Karakachanska sheep
At hte start of the 20th century, the Karakachans were typical nomadic
shepherds. They grazed their sheep only on natural pastures which were in
different places in the two main seasons, often at a considerable distance.
Horses and sheep were of primary importance, since they provided almost all food, clothing, furnishings and transportation. The Karakachan sheep and horse are among the earliest breeds, and are perfectly suited to the nomadic way of life. The main trades of the Karakachans - sheep-breeding and dairy-farming had a series of specific features. Karakachanska sheep: is characterized by black or black–brown color. Estimated population size is lower than 1000. This strain is kept under nomad system. The name came from the Karakachans, Balkan nomad people. It is considered that due to their extremely conservative livestock traditions, Karakachans have saved the most primitive and pure domestic forms of animal breeding. However, this tradition has being abandoned over the years and nowadays a pure Karakachanka sheep can hardly be found. This sheep is very temperament animal, very dynamic in mountain area, durable and resistant
It is one of the shortest breeds with very rough and long mixed wool. Originally the sheep are mainly dark colored - black and grey, but because of the higher price of the white wool nowadays the white colored animals predominate. The rams are horned while the mother-sheep usually aren’t, but short horned animals can also be found. The tail is thin, short (reaching the tarsal joint) with length 24 - 25 cm.
The Karakachan sheep are short (59.5 cm shoulder height), with not very long body (59.0 cm) and narrow sized - 15.5 cm chests.
The animals of the both sexes are with very dry, thin and strong bone system and structure, they are vivacious tempered very mobile and with unusually developed instincts for self-preservation and modernity.
The live weight of the mother-sheep is 30 - 35 kg and the one of the rams is 50 - 60 kg,
the yield of wool is respectively 1.5 - 2.0 kg and 3.5 - 4.5 kg. The fleece is composed of very rough, long awed and short thin fluffy fibers. Such a structure helps for the protection of the skin and the body as a whole from the rain and wind. The rough awed fibers serve as a roof on which the rain water drains away and the downy fibers remain dry and keep the body warm. The fertility is not high - 104 - 107%, the milk-yield is satisfactory - 45 - 50 kg of milk for a lactation period.
The preservation of indigenous breeds of one nation is not a duty to its government only. This is not an act of pure gene preservation of endangered breeds as well. This is the concern for preserving time honored traditions related with breeding these animals.
