There can be many reasons for been laid off. Either you were the victim of organization's cost cutting measures or maybe you were not cut out for the job. Whatever may be the reason, been out of a job is very tragic and can be financially and mentally ruinous. If you have been laid off recently, then how do you intend to cope with it? What is your future course of action? Here are few tips that can make your life bit easier in these trying times.

1. Getting fired is not a big deal. Even CEOs of billion dollar organizations get fired. Blaming yourself for getting fired can be counterproductive. You need to get off the self perpetuating cycle of self pity and analyze the road ahead.

2. Keep you ears to ground. It is always better to keep track of what's happening in your company. Knowing well in advance that layoffs are impending can prepare you for the eventuality much better. Usually, there are some signs that indicate that layoffs can happen anytime soon. When your company is initiating cost cutting measures and top rung management is leaving the company, know that it's time you abandon the ship.

3. When you are handed over the pink slip, be graceful and accept it. Do not fret and fume. Make sure you leave a positive impression on your management and colleagues. If you have been laid off for reasons not related to your performance, then get a letter of recommendation from your management.

4. Once you have been terminated from the job, your assets are even more precious. Handle your cash carefully. Invest your money in options which are risk free and consolidate your savings. Reduce your expenses to a bare minimum.

5. As soon as get to know about layoffs, start searching for jobs. Remaining out of job means financial loss. If you land a job quickly after layoff it will minimize your loss and mental stress. Out of job for a prolonged period also means loss of valuable experience and your value in job market diminishes.

6. After you have been fired, keep your chin up. In a job, it's not just your skills which are valuable but also your attitude. A positive attitude will keep you above water through these tough times and will also increase your probability of landing a better job.

7. Never mention in your job application that you have been terminated from your job. This will make your prospective employers question your skills and ability. If the issue crops up, clarify it during face to face interview.

8. Do not panic or desperate for a job. Getting frustrated will increase chances you making wrong decisions. Keep in touch with your friends, relatives, colleagues and recruitment firms. Increase your network and you will increase the probability of getting a job.

9. While you are unemployed, use the free time to polish or enhance your skills. This will keep you abreast of your field and even increase your chances.
