Intersting biodiesel plants - algae and jatropha

Business RSS Feed

In times of high petrol prices biodiesel is becoming more interesting and popular with drivers. To produce biodiesel a variety of oils can be used, especially algae and Jatropha .

Algae are organisms, which are simple and typically autotrophic. To grow algae, waste materials such as sewage can be used. It is also used for food production without displacing land. The biofuel which is derived from these organisms is called algae fuel, second-generation biofuel or algaeoleum. To produce biodiesel using algae, land that is not suitable for agriculture is used. Furthermore it is interesting as ocean and wastewater can be used for its production, it does not affect fresh water resources and it is biodegradable. Thus, it is an interesting type of biodiesel.

Jatropha oil is a vegetable oil, which is produced from the seeds of the Jatropha curcas. Jatropha itself is commonly known as physic nut. It was rated as one of the best plants to produce biodiesel in the future by Goldman Sachs. It raises a lot of interest as it can survive drought and pests. Furthermore, it produces seeds containing between 27% and 40% oil. The small tree was spread as a valuable hedge tree to Asia and Africa and some of its compounds are very toxic. The jatropha oil is extracted by crushing the seeds. The oil can then be processed to produce a high-quality biodiesel that can be used in a standard diesel car. It can thus be used as an exquisite oil and reclamation plant.
