Comic super heroes - what is the connection

Book review RSS Feed

What makes comic super heroes so special? Besides their super powers, their secret identities, their spandex costumes and scripted lines you would think the amount of super heroes would be limited. If you are aware of the various media types, you will see new super heroes popping up right and left. This must mean that each one is unique, correct?

No, not really. Every super hero has their own unique captive audience that awaits the super heroes next adventure. Even though each of the comic super heroes is unique, they all have common ties that their readers bond with. One of the more powerful bonds that tie superhero and fan together is the good and evil effect and how the superhero deals with the moral issue.

A couple of examples of bonding examples based on good and evil are below:

The Paragon: Superman would be the first hero that comes to mind and he stands for everything taht is just and right. Most readers look for the example of good triumphing over evil and this quality will succeed in any superheroes endeavor. Even though this is a predictable pattern, it is this value that makes a Paragon comic super hero so endearing to their fans.

The Broken: Though Superman is the perfect example of a Paragon, Spawn would be the perfect example of the broken hero. The Broken hero is faced with a multitude of questions in his attempt to find the good among evil. Broken heroes are appealing due to their constant moral struggle to gain goodness.

The comic super heroes in this category usually have a more unpredictable and diverse story line, while they bring the question of how good can be attained to light. For a fan that may be struggling with moral issues, the moral struggles that a comic super hero faces may be refreshing and unique.

The Antihero: The comic super hero the Mask is the perfect example of the Antihero. Generally these type of comic super heroes are driven by a self-interest, though they maintain enough positive traits to be called good. Antiheroes are driven by a personal agenda instead of the actual pursuit of good.

The Antihero maintains their mark as a hero by the very nature of their interests that align with good. This gives the Antihero a unique edge that puts them in the middle of good and evil, and also keeps their fans guessing as to how the Antihero will handle various moral decisions. In the human mind that is filled with possibilities, there coexists a mix of stereotypes. However, it is still helpful to have an understanding of how we connect to our favorite superheroes.

Whether we cherish the Broken hero like Spawn, or the Antihero like Mask, and even the Paragon like Superman, we would be able to have a better understanding of the connection to them.
