The heros of the comic golden age

Book review RSS Feed

In these modern times, the forms of superheroes are a recycled comic that are just trying to out do each other. Some of the worn out concepts include: saving the damsel in distress, saving the earth, fending off aliens and secret identities. The only thing difference in the story lines is a new quirk thrown in every now and again.

So why do these classic formulas of the comic golden age appeal to modern readers? In the late 1930's comic books were introduced that appealed to people of all ages. Batman, Superman and Spiderman and the other superheroes that came to be first appeared in the comic golden age and came with a brand new concept.

They were heroes that would battle the forces of evil and save the day. For people of that time, the ability to read and see these colorful heroes was fascinating. Several themes surrounding technology and politics lent their hands to spice up the stories, such as how during World War 2 Adolf Hitler and the Japanese were pitted against super heroes. The threat of atomic war added even more fuel to the fire.

As you look back to the comic golden age, you will see that the super heroes represented the hopes and dreams of the average person. It is a fantasy that mortals can never reach, however it is fascinating to see happen with a superhero. By seeing the stories unfold in such a rich colorful format it allows the reader to experience it for himself. During those times it was a welcome diversion and breath of fresh air as they dealt with every day life.

The heroes of the comic golden age, are still alive and well in the market of today. Half a decade later, you can see modern versions of these comic book heroes in movies and as video game characters. These repackaged super heroes have only been changed with the technology trends of more modern times. The concept of super powers in comic book heroes has gone from paper, to movies, to our computer screens.

If the stories continue to be adapted with our modern pace they will always have a special spot in society. No matter the length of time that has passed, the comic golden age has a lesson and stories that we can learn from. These super heroes who have been with us for the better part of half a century will always have a special place in our hearts as long as there are people that aspire to do good in their lives.
