Job interviewing tips - look sharp - be sharp

Beauty RSS Feed

No one wants to squander a great opportunity. For that reason it's important to go into your job interview as prepared as you can possibly be. Now more than ever you really need to put your best foot forward since there are a lot more people who want jobs than available jobs. Use these job interviewing tips to make the most out of your interview.

The first thing you want to do is to find out as much about the company that you are applying at as possible. Try to find out how much someone with your level of experience can expect to make, find out what types of bonus programs and benefit programs the company has.

Getting a general overview will help you enormously when you are at the interview and you are asked questions. Knowing some of this information will also make it easier for you to come up with your own well thought out questions to ask.

Another thing you want to do is to make sure that you look your best. Every company has it's own 'dress code'. Though it may not actually be written down in the employee handbook, find out what others at the company wear and wear something similar for your interview.

If you know that most of the people at a certain company dress in professional attire (suit and tie with jacket) than by all means wear a suit tie and jacket to the interview. Also make sure that you are either clean shaven or if you have facial hair, make sure it's well trimmed and neat. Scruffy doesn't go over well in most corporate environments no matter what you see on t.v.

Arrive a few minutes early for your interview and respect the time of the interviewer. It's a great idea to ask questions as you go along in the interview process, it's also a good idea to engage the interviewer a little bit. It's not a good idea to spew every detail about your life all over them.

When asked what you can bring to the company, try to give specific examples of some of your past accomplishments. The interviewer wants to get a feel for the type of person you are. If you only provide them with generic answers you won't allow them to get to know you.

When it comes time to discuss salary try to keep it a little general if possible. Instead of saying you want 'x' amount of money try saying that since you are very experienced you expect to be compensated at the upper end of the pay scale for your position.

If you are 'forced' to name a number make sure you have that in mind before you go. You will have already found out what others in that position make, add a little bit to the top of that to allow yourself some negotiating room.

You don't want to go into a interview sounding like you've been rehearsing, however, it's always a good idea to sound sure of yourself and confidant. Using these job interviewing tips will help you achieve that calm exterior that you want (what's going on inside might be a whole different ball game!).
