Unlike the internal hard drives that came with your computer, the external varieties are more shock and impact resistant and can usually handle all but the hardest of knocks. Even though it doesn't make much sense, these external drives are actually more quiet when operating than many of the internal drives.
When it comes time to 'go shopping' for your new drive, you should first decide what size you want. Do you want/ need 320 GB or do you think you'll need more? Of course if you buy a bigger drive, you'll pay more. But still the cost is pretty inexpensive with the average price for a 320 GB at around $50 and the price for a 1 TB external drive between around $80 and $110. No matter which option you choose, you can get a huge amount of backup storage for very little money.
Now that you've determined what size you want, you can then go online to various shopping sites, or forums that specialize in computer hardware, and ask around. Find out which makes and models people are talking about and which ones they recommend. Word of mouth is usually one of the best ways to find out if a model really delivers or not.
Also, when you're comparing prices at this stage, also compare what each unit comes with. Most units, but not all, will come with the USB cable. It's also nice to have full instructions and maybe even a carrying case. This should all factor into the price. Don't just pay more for some name brand, it may not be worth the extra money, ask around first before you buy your pocket external hard drive.
